Torqeedo, based in Gilching, Germany, manufactures clean electric propulsion systems in the 0.5-100 kW range for both commercial and leisure vessels. It offers 32 electric drives ranging from 1-80 hp and offers accessories such as solar charging technology, lithium batteries and a smartphone app. The company is owned by DEUTZ AG, a Porz, Germany-based engine manufacturer.
It has long been said you can move the world with the power of hydraulics—using fluid under pressure to do the hard work for us. Silver Sport Transmissions (SST) understands the benefits of hydraulics and has applied it to a very effective clutch release system for your classic Chevy. The PerfectFit hydraulic clutch kit from Silver Sport Transmissions takes the power of hydraulics and puts it to work for you. You will never have a better shifting experience once you make the switch to hydraulics.
One requirement for the 4L60E is that it demands input from a throttle position sensor (TPS). If your engine is equipped with any type of modern EFI, TPS is already part of the regime. But, if the engine is carbureted, this will require adapting a TPS. Luckily, HGM Automotive makes a slick TPS adapter that will bolt directly to a Holley, Edelbrock, or Q-jet carburetor. Other companies like Holley and Innovate also make TPS mounts, but we really like the HGM unit called Accu-Link. This is yet another expense that must be integrated into the cost of a 4L60E.
I really do wonder if some of the people calling us skeptics “Luddites” in a knee jerk fashion have much experience with these systems they’re advocating for. If I try one of these systems that works great, I’ll say so and maybe I’ll change my mind. Currently however, it feels like we’re in the equivalent of motorized seat belts when it comes to these systems. Good intentions, but they are intrusive (downright dangerous in some cases).
The new Deutz TCD 9.0 four-cylinder in-line engine, generating 300 kW and 1,700 Nm of torque, aims to form part of a new family of engines. Together with the TCD 12.0 and the TCD 13.5 six-cylinder in-line engines, it further extends the upper end of the Deutz power range.
G-Body Hydramax Clutch KitThis clutch kit from American Powertrain is a true, bolt-on, hydraulic clutch conversion for 1977–1988 GM G-body vehicles. The G-body firewall is not known for its strength to adequately support the extra force needed to engage a hydraulic clutch, nor is it very ergonomic. The powdercoated and laser-cut mounting bracket for the clutch master cylinder uses the factory brake master cylinder mounting location to ensure maximum strength. A Wilwood 3/4-inch bore master cylinder is included in the kit with the Hydramax release bearing that works with the T5, TKO, T56/Magnum transmissions and seamlessly works with American Powertrain’s G-body clutch pedal set. Price: $538–$750, depending on applicationAmerican Powertrain 931.646.4836americanpowertrain.com
This is the governor that commands WOT up-shift speeds. It uses weights and springs just like a mechanical advance mechanism in a distributor, but employs two sets of weights for low and high speeds. The governors in TH350, TH400, and 700R4 transmissions are the same. For the record, this photo is of a governor in a TH350.
I kept hearing the same thing, over and over, when talking about the full-size pickup truck market: Loyalty is king and there is no such thing as a conquest in the truck space—if you owned a Ford you’re going to buy another Ford; a Ram owner will buy another Ram; a GMC owner doesn’t want to drive the same Chevy Silverado as his employees, so he’s going GMC—again.
This multiple-path, multiple technology strategy is necessary due to the wide range of applications and power requirements in the off-road equipment industry. As the two charts chart below detail, electrification is well suited to intermittent-use machines such as lift and access equipment. But as the applications demand greater, power, torque and production, some form or combination of hybrid and internal combustion power will be needed.
Matt’s video also helped me get in touch with another ZR2 owner in California, who wanted to remain anonymous out of concern that this story could in some way affect the claim he’s filing with GM. That’s his truck above.
Q: I have been running E85 in my flex-fuel vehicle more often than not lately. I actually got it for $1.39 a gallon a couple of months ago. I was just told that I should change my oil more often since I’m using E85. It’s this true?
With my MT sedan, and ‘good’ winter tires, I actually disengage the Traction Control system at some intersections/starts.
