On the Hondas, at least, you can turn off everything, including VSA. (You have to actually turn on the lane-keep assist at every ignition cycle, or else youâll only get the roadway-departure mitigation.)
Interior treatments range from basic vinyl seats in the lower trims, lots of cool cloth in the middle, and leather in the top trims. Heated front seats are available in most trims, with ventilation and rear seat heat in the top trims. The interior is well-made and well laid-out. Our test Trail Boss came with rubber mats instead of carpet, which is always appreciated. Itâs a truck, after all. Carpets just hold mud and muck and theyâre hard to clean. With the $1,805 convenience package, the cloth seats get 10-way power adjustment, lumbar support, and heat. The steering wheel is heated, too.
In the early 00’s I had a 1989 Cherokee with the Bendix 9 ABS system. That thing was a pile of garbage. Bendix decided to forego the typical vacuum brake booster and instead had the ABS module apply the brake assist. Imagine how an ABS system would age if it had to operate every time you applied the brakes instead of just every time a real ABS event was required. That’s exactly how this thing aged. Every 8-or-so key cycles I’d start it up and the ABS indicator would light, and I wouldn’t have brake assist. Lovely. I’d have to shut it down and start it again hoping the ABS would act properly that time.
When it comes to rear brakes, there are big losers. Suzuki and Kawasaki have very finicky rear pedal adjustments. If you get them wrong, the rear brake will overheat, squeal and lock up. Worse yet, Kawasaki decided that the 2019 KX450 needed a more powerful rear brake. This is seriously flawed logic, because most rear brakes are already too easy to lock up. What they needed was a more progressive feel, not more clamping pressure. Kawasaki’s all-new, jumbo-sized, 250mm rear rotor is the same size as many front rotors were a few years ago (and 30mm larger than the 2019 KTM 450SXF’s 220mm rear rotor). The result is a disaster. The rear of the Kawasaki cannot be modulated. It grabbed, locked up and skidded in every hard-pack corner. It got hot from locking up and began chirping. It is a terrible rear brake. Our backyard fix was to grind the brake pads down on their ends so that the pads could contact the spinning rotors with a less harsh interface.
People resent being told by a nanny government that they can’t buy a cheap car. In practical terms too, it’s unnecessary to mandate these features which insurance companies, economies of scale, and free markets would make ubiquitous anyway.
Right on jagboi. In my case it was nothing as severe, but even a gentle nudge or resistance on the wheel can be incredibly unnerving when you’re on the highway in the rain and use the steering to feel for what the traction conditions are like and are holding a line around a curve on the highway. In my case passing a semi and holding myself towards the left edge of the outer lane.
@ Vanillasludge: Tell that to the families of the 200 or more people who were killed by the early air bags which snapped their necks.
If your next project involves using EFI, consider the latest in electronics that now combine GM transmission control with EFI. For example, several companies now offer 4L60E and 4L80E control as part of their EFI systems. Holley’s Dominator EFI offers this, as does Big Stuff3. Just recently, Holley introduced the Terminator LS EFI system, retro-fit for multi-point LS, that will optionally control a 4L60E transmission. This eliminates the cost of purchasing a stand-alone controller. FiTech also offers a similar control opportunity.

My parents had seat belts installed in the ’57 Chevy wagon in 1960. I don’t ***know*** what they paid, but I doubt it was more than a couple of hundred dollars–adjusted for inflation–and it could have been well less than that. Various other cars had seat belts, and then shoulder harnesses installed until shoulder harnesses became mandatory.

I don’t know if the change to cars having “anti-lock” was a legal idea (i.e. you can still skid a car with anti-lock brakes) or just a marketing change.
