On the V8 engines, the big news is the new Dynamic Fuel Management system that takes cylinder deactivation to the next level. Unlike the previous system that changed the engine from a V8 to a V4, the new system offers 17 different deactivation profiles, and can choose among them every 12.5 milliseconds to adapt to changing conditions in real time.
The application was dug up on Friday by automotive errata super sleuth Bozi Tatarevic over at Jalopnik. It describes a "clutch-by-wire" system that would essentially use a servo and a potentiometer (like an e-throttle in a modern engine) to operate a vehicle’s clutch. It’s an exciting idea, and I’ll explain why.
He also mentioned that, to prevent airbags deploying off-road, Colorado owners have been pulling fuse No. 18, or installing switches to turn off the airbag system—moves that could result in preventable injuries if the vehicle does roll or crash.
Finn did tell me that he’s subsequently taken the truck on a successful 10,000 mile off-road adventure this summer, and had no issues. But remember, it’s just a patent. It may not go anywhere. For now, it’s an interesting piece of tech and I’m eager to see if GM does anything with it.
As I walked to my tool box to grab a 15-mm wrench, I visualized myself performing the adjustment. I opened the driver door and placed my body on the floor of the car, close to the foot pedals. I found the clutch master cylinder adjustment rod and loosened the lock nut. I adjusted the rod until it was just touching the pedal and the end of the clutch master cylinder piston.
