In the past, an engine manufacturer’s responsibility stopped at the flywheel. Today, an increasing number of engine OEMs are paying as much attention to the drivetrain as they are to the engine itself. And this includes, in many cases, electrified and hybrid drive trains.

Right now, the 2019 Silverado and the 2019 Ram 1500 are the top contenders in the pickup segment. The F-150 has a little catching up to do, though it’s the only one currently available with a turbodiesel engine. Toyota and Nissan’s entries need their next refresh to play at this level.

The worst is Subaru, which is beginning to install cameras inside the car to spy on the driver. They use facial recognition technology to decide whether you’re looking at the road the way they wants you so. If not, the car will slow down and eventually stop. Do you expect me to actually PAY for this intrusion? If you want it, perhaps you should be taking mass transit.

7. Triumph made it clear with the chassis—the 2019 Scrambler 1200 XE is trail ready. Despite the XE and XC sharing a purpose-built steel cradle chassis, they do have distinct personalities, and it begins with the chassis geometry. To improve the XE’s off-road stability, the XE features a longer swingarm and relaxed rake compared to the XC. The XE’s nearly 62-inch wheelbase and almost 27 degrees of rake are ADV-like, and certainly appreciated when you’re bouncing around on a fire road, as you’ll be laying down a wide footprint in the dirt. On the road, it does mean that the XE is slightly a bit statelier in the corners.

FiTech offered to perform the swap at their shop in Riverside, California. This also required an aftermarket fuel tank to accommodate the necessary in-tank fuel pump assembly. This almost required as much effort as the intake manifold swap since this IRS-equipped Tri-Five was anything but stock out back, but the conversion went smoothly and very soon the ’56 hit the streets for some simple tuning. That’s when disaster struck. For reasons still not entirely clear, the 502 suffered a rod bearing failure that required a complete rebuild. Chevy 502s come with aluminum production rod and main bearings that sometimes are a bit unforgiving. If the crank hits a main bearing for whatever reason, the debris peeled from the mains usually end up in the rod bearings that then quickly fail. The project was delayed for several months while the engine went through a complete rebuild. Once the crank was massaged and the engine builder reassembled the 502 with most of its original parts, the swap could continue. The engine was initially run on a test stand with a single four-barrel carburetor to check for leaks and proper behavior before the 2×4 FiTech system was again installed.

Both lane-assist equipped rental cars I’ve tried where the system is on by default have bordered on dangerous to drive when the system introduces an unexpected “nudge” in the steering, in the rain at 70mph on a twisty highway. Absolutely absurd. That was a CX5, the rental XC90 was much the same, on twisty country back roads driving to my brother’s past dark, smoothing out the corners by approaching or putting a wheel on the line made the system flip out and try to “help.” Stupid.

NEUTRAL NO-FUSS CHASSIS: The KTM 450SXF and Husqvarna FC450 are the only chromoly frames in the 450 class. For 2019, their torsional rigidity was increased by 10 percent. Fast riders thought the 2019 Austrian bikes were more accurate, while Vet riders preferred the previous year’s more resilient frame. The KTM/Husky frame is very balanced. It doesn’t deliver a lot of unnecessary movement, fore/aft teeter-totter or chassis twist under acceleration. It is nicely balanced and needs no body English to make things happen. It does it all. It can turn, and it’s accurate in the rough and super stable at speed. Not exciting but businesslike.

Despite the goodies the Syclone came with some issues which included the frequent failure of the fuel pump that would cause the engine to stall and not start.
