Oil filters have long been popular for many years now with manufacturers creating better and better models. With the excellent marketing put on the product, it isn’t surprising that many individuals are trying to purchase one for their machinery. Prior to buying oil filters however, it’s crucial that individuals first understand the basics of the device and why exactly it is used.

What are oil filters?

As the name implies, these filters separate contaminants from the basic oil. It can be used for different types of oil ranging from lubricating, transmission, engine, and hydraulic. Much like air filter, it works by allowing the oil to pass through a series of materials that manages to remove all the contaminants. The result is unfettered oil substances that smoothly help with the running of the engine.

What are the advantages of using them?

The cleaning process is a crucial part of smooth engine operation. Considering the fact that air filters are mostly used for top engines such as those of aircraft and naval vessels, the need for a clean oil system is fairly obvious. With the contaminants removed, the possibility of clogging becomes nil. Suffice to say, these filters make sure that no damage is done to the engine, allowing it to use the oil efficiently without any hindrances.

These filters also contribute to the efficiency of the vehicle. When an engine stops running, the oil typically drains to the bottom part. The filter however makes sure that a small amount of the oil stays in place instead of draining down like the rest of the liquid. When the engine is started again, the remaining oil kept by the filter automatically starts lubrication without waiting for the others to rise up. This allows the car to start quickly and efficiently without any chance of damage.

What are the various types?

Oil filters vary depending on what engine it will be used on and how it works. Following are some of the most popular types out in the market today:

· Mechanical Oil Filter – typically pleated, it traps the contaminants and keeps them in a separate cubicle from the oil. Over time, these contaminants will be too much, making it necessary for the owner to change the filter.

· Centrifugal Oil Filter – this device type utilizes centrifugal force to separate the contaminant from the oil. A spinning motion is induced and the energy created is what attracts the larger particles away from the liquid. Centrifugal types are typically two sided – one part fiber to filter the particles and another to keep them separated within a small terminal. The fiber can also accumulate dirt overtime, stopping them from rotating in which case, replacement is necessary.

· Magnetic Oil Filter – as the name suggests, an electromagnet is used in here to obtain the particles from the oil. The problem with this design is that if not cleaned on a periodic basis, some of the contaminants might actually pass through. Replacement of the filter is not necessary.

When buying oil filters, individuals are advised to do a little browsing first. As already mentioned, there are different types available today which should make the decision process easier.
