Between the videos and the stories shared online, I’ve found a total of seven accounts of Chevrolet Colorado side curtain airbags deploying in moderate off-road conditions. Plus, in the time it took me to type this story, another apparent owner wrote a complaint on the GM-Trucks messaging board about side airbags allegedly deploying during a U-turn.

My parents had seat belts installed in the ’57 Chevy wagon in 1960. I don’t ***know*** what they paid, but I doubt it was more than a couple of hundred dollars–adjusted for inflation–and it could have been well less than that. Various other cars had seat belts, and then shoulder harnesses installed until shoulder harnesses became mandatory.

Both systems have drawbacks. Cable clutches often require a lot of effort from the driver to actuate and, because cables stretch over time with use, frequent adjustment. Hydraulic clutches never need adjustment, but they are known to develop leaks over time as the elements and brake fluid degrade the rubber seals in the system. This electronic clutch would solve all of those problems.

For those who think it’s better than nothing, talk to the parents of young children who were killed in parking lot fender-benders while in vehicles with first-generation airbags. It was one thing to test new technology when I was racing cars. I will not be a beta test dummy as a consumer.
